Obituary of Ervin Henry Reutzel
Ervin Henry Reutzel, age 92, of Apache Junction, AZ passed away quietly on 08/10/2021 at Mama Care Group Home in Mesa, AZ. Ervin was born on July 4, 1929 on a farm in Ledyard, IA to parents, Henry and Anna Mathias-Reutzel. He was the oldest of 7 children. Ervin attended school at Seneca Consolidated Schools in Fenton, IA and graduating in 1947.
Ervin was united in marriage to Anna Mae Sokoloski-Reutzel on September 7, 1950 in Fairmont, MN. To this union they had six children: Gloria, Helen, Gary, Debra, Rebecca, and Roger. They divorced in 1971. He married Dorothy Mahernholz on October 2, 1982 in Fort Dodge, IA. He had one step-son, Mark Mahernholz.
Ervin was a musician all of his life playing the saxaphone and clarinet. His family had their own family band when he was a young man known as the Henry Reutzel Orchestra. Later Ervin had his own band known as the Erv Reutzel Orchestra, playing in the midwest. Dorothy joined the band in 1982 playing keyboard. They later decided to spend their winters in Arizona and played in numerous mobile parks and dance halls until 2018. A legend in the music community. Ervin also farmed in his early years as well as working in grocery stores and in radio sales with KBEW in Blue Earth, MN and KQWC in Webster City, IA.
Ervin was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy on February 23, 2021, parents Henry and Anna Reutzel, two brothers, Richard and Robert, one daughter, Debra, 2 sons, Gary and Roger and a grandson, Joshua Musser, brother-in-law Raymond Szuberski, and sister-in-law Beverly Reutzel.
Ervin is survived by two brothers, Harvey (Margie) and Darrel (Nancy), two sisters, Lorraine Szuberski and Darlene (Joe) Singer, three daughters Gloria (Dave)Brownlee of Apache Junction, AZ, Helen (Kim)Schroeder of Austin, MN and Rebecca Musser of Blaine, MN and step-son Mark Mahernholz, of Parker, AZ, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The family of Ervin wishes to extend our sincere thanks to very good friends, Ed and Lydia Breitreutz of Tilley, Canada, Ken Henn and Bilmar Jensen of Mesa, AZ, Karen Draheim of Waterville, MN and Marilyn Pearson from Idaho, his caretakers at Mama Care Group Home, Berris and Tess and his Hospice nurses, Becca, Lisa and Kendall. We could not have done everything without you.
A Celebration of Life for Ervin and Dorothy is TBD. Burial of their ashes will be at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge, IA at a later date.
