Obituary of Willie Dean Skaggs




Willie Dean Skaggs, (87), of Surprise, AZ, passed away on April 17, 2021.  Dean was born in Graves County, Kentucky (near Mayfield) to Harry and Ava Skaggs on August 22, 1933. He grew up on a farm and went to elementary school in Lowes, KY.  Following High School he went into the United States Army where he was Honorably Discharged.  In 1956 he attended Murray State University and graduated with his B.S. (1959) and M.A. (1963) and became a Mathematics Teacher and held various administrative positions.  Dean met the love of his life in 1963 and married Doris Foster on June 8, 1963, in St. Louis, MO.  Dean and Doris had two sons (Brad and Mike) and they loved their family dearly and created a wonderful home full of joy.


To pursue a career in school administration, Dean went on to achieve his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1971 in Carbondale, IL.

 Soon after receiving his Ph.D. Dean and his family moved to moved Casa Grande, AZ where in 1972 he became Superintendent of the Casa Grande Elementary Schools.  He served as Superintendent for more than 20 years and grew the district from four to seven elementary schools and achieved many other great improvements for the education and betterment of the community.


Dean was an intelligent man with a strong work ethic and principles, he was a great role model for his family and community.  He loved his family and enjoyed playing tennis, gardening, and hiking.  He was quick-witted, great at checkers and card games, and loved to laugh.  He will be missed dearly.


Dean is preceded in death by Doris who passed on October 20, 1992.  

Dean is survived by his two son’s Brad, Mike and Mike’s wife Sonja, his grandchildren Jack, Luke, and Annie, and his sister Brenda Maddox and her husband Gene. 


For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.  (2 Corinthians 4:17-18)


Family will be contacted for Memorial Services. The family of Dean wishes to extend our sincere thanks to A Loving Heart Assisted Living where they cared for him during his late years.
