Donald Melton

Obituary of Donald Ray Melton

Donald Ray Melton of Peoria, Arizona, passed away at the age of 73 in the early
morning hours of November 17, 2020. He made his transition peacefully at home
with his family close by.
Don was born on February 14, 1947 to parents Carl and Gyola Melton. They met
and married in Hinton, Oklahoma, before moving to San Jose, California, where
Don was born. They resided there for a couple of years before moving back to be
close to family. Don always spoke fondly of growing up in Elk City, Oklahoma, and
loved going back to visit the place that would always feel like home. After
graduating from Elk City High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and served his
country for four years as an aircraft mechanic. Upon discharge, he settled in
Phoenix, Arizona, where his parents and three siblings were then living. He joined
the Phoenix Police Department, starting out as a patrolman, then a motorcycle
officer, before being trained to fly airplanes and helicopters, thus fulfilling his
lifelong dream of becoming a pilot. Don served his community until he retired
and continued to work at various jobs whether it be flying medical evac
helicopters or transporting passengers and supplies to the oil rigs out of
Shreveport, Louisiana. When he could no longer fly, he worked in retail before
becoming an operational control specialist at Petroleum Helicopters International
Don will be missed dearly by his children, Melissa and Matthew, granddaughter
Evelyn, brothers Ron and Troy, and sister Trena, along with so many family
members and friends whose lives were touched by his generous spirit and big
heart. Don loved his family, his dog, his friends, his Harley and anything to do
with aviation. We love him and think of him every day.
